What is culture?
A way of life including values, belief, language, art
What are values?
widely accepted beliefs that are deemed desirable
What are norms?
Values put into practice that govern socially acceptable behaviour in social situations
What are customs?
Traditional norms based on old rituals that are dependant on locations and culture
Name all the different types of culture
Mass, popular, high, low, folk, subcultural, global
What is folk culture?
old, traditional cultures of the past when people lived in small rural areas e.g. Morris dancing
What is global culture?
Culture which transcends national borders and exist across the world e.g. tv shows
What is high culture?
Activities that the rich do that are associated with high status e.g. opera
What is low culture?
Activities that the poor do that are associated with low status e.g. tabloids
What is mass culture?
commercial mass produced culture that develop from common exposure to media e.g. social media trends
What is popular culture?
commercially consumed beliefs, practices and trends that reach large audiences rather than an educated elite e.g. pop music
What is subculture?
smaller distinct groups within a larger culture that have contrasting beliefs to the general population ( often pro or anti) e.g. mods and rockers
What are the agencies of socialisation that socialise us into different cultures?
religion, family, media, peer groups, education
