Define ‘development’
Development is the increase in skills, emotions and abilities
What is the life stage called before later adulthood
Adulthood
Give 3 physical changes for a male adolescent
Voice breaks, shoulders broaden, penis and testicles grow, grow taller, acne, pubic hair

Adolescence
Define ‘growth’
Growth is the increase in physical size
Give 3 physical changes during later adulthood
Skin loses elasticity, eyesight deteriorates, hearing deteriorates, taster deteriorates, get smaller

Give 2 physical changers for a child
Grow taller, improve ability to hop, run, skip, jump, better coordination
Define ‘developmental norms’
The expected growth and development for each life stage. e.g. baby sits unsupported at 8 months
What is meant by the term ‘gross motor skill’
Abilities acquired during infancy and early childhood- LARGER movements (crawling)
What is meant by the term ‘fine motor skill’
SMALLER actions, coordination of small muscle movement (holding a spoon, drawing)
What is puberty?
The period during which adolescents reach sexual maturity and become capable of reproduction
How does an individual grow and develop during childhood?
Physical- Throw and catch, run, jump, increased co-ordination
Intellectual- Learn new vocabulary, learns right from wrong, understand concepts (colour, size, symbols)
Emotional- Depends on carers and close family, better at controlling their emotions.
Social- Take turns, share, make friends, prefer to play with children of the same sex
How does an individual grow and develop during infancy?
Physical- Stand with support, sit without support, walk and crawl
Intellectual- Understand and respond to simple commands
Emotional- Tantrums, shy of strangers, show jealousy of siblings
Social- Can tell people they know from strangers, understand how to share
How does an individual grow and develop during adolescence?
Physical- Muscles develop, grow pubic, facial and underarm hair, develop breast, start to menstruate
Intellectual- Learn more difficult concepts, use information to solve problems, independent
Emotional- Mood swings, insecurity
Social- Important to fit in, independence from parents, increasing sexual maturity
