1. Systems Flashcards
Inputs
When matter or energy (e.g. solar energy) is added to a system
Outputs
When matter or energy leaves the system
Stores
When matter or energy builds up
Flows (or transfers)
When matter or energy moves from one store into another
Boundaries
The limits of the system
Open systems
- Both energy and matter can enter and leave
- E.g. - drainage basins
Closed systems
- Matter (any physical substance - e.g. water/ carbon) CANT enter or leave a closed system.
- Energy CAN enter and leave a closed system
Positive feedback
Occurs when a chain of events amplifies the impacts of the original event
Negative feedback
A chain of events that nullifies the impacts of the original event, leading to dynamic equilibrium
Cryosphere
Includes all of the earths systems where its cold enough for water to freeze - glacial landscapes
Lithosphere
The outermost part of the earth. It includes the crust and the upper parts of the mantle
Hydrosphere
Includes all the water on the earth, It may be in liquid, solid or gas form. It can also be saline (salty) or fresh.
Biosphere
Is the part of the earth’s systems where living things are found. Includes all the living things on earth - plants, animals, birds, fungi, bacteria etc.
Aquifers
Are underground water stores
