Q

Describe the difference between Eli’s leadership over Israel and Samuel’s leadership over Israel. See chapters 2/4 & 7/12 respectively.

A

The difference between Eli and Samuel’s leadership is that Samuel consults God about his
decisions and does not deliberately disobey the Lord.

17
Q

What does Israel demand from Samuel in chapter 8? Why do they want this?

A

They demand a king to be like the other nations.

18
Q

What type of rights will the King have over the people of Israel? What will he be able to “take” from them?

A

He will appoint himself commander of thousands and take their women as bakers. They will become slaves to him.

19
Q

Based on class discussion, why does God give us things we ask for even when He knows it is not best for us?

A

So we can learn a lesson. When we are stubborn the only way to learn is to get exactly what we want.

20
Q

List the 3 ways Saul responds passively about Kingship in chapter 10.

A

He hides among the baggage, does not tell his uncle about becoming king, and does not
respond to the people who doubt his kingship.

21
Q

What drives Saul to disobey the Lord’s command and offer the sacrifice in chapter 13?

A

He is worried about what people think and that drives his actions.

22
Q

Based on class discussion, what does it mean for God to regret? (See 1 Samuel 15.11, 27-29 & 15.35)

A

God is disappointed because he gave us the opportunity to succeed.

23
Q

Explain Saul’s decline throughout 1 Samuel. Give at least 3 text references explaining the process.

A

Saul starts to lose favor with God and enlists the help of David to rid him of a bad spirit. (16:14) Then he becomes afraid of David because the Lord was with David but not him. (18:12) Lastly, Saul becomes so jealous that he plots to kill David (19:2)

24
Q

Explain David’s rise throughout the book of 1 Samuel. Give at least 3 text references explaining the process.

A

David starts as a shepherd who is enlisted to play the lyre to rid Saul of an evil spirit. (16:16)
Then he becomes friends with Jonathen making a covenant with him even though he was not
destined to rule as he should. (18:1) Lastly, David has the opportunity to kill Saul but does not because it was not the Lord’s desire for him to do so. (26:11)

25
Q

How long is David on the run from Saul?

A

10 years.

26
Q

When David first goes to the King of Gath in chapter 21, and the King recognizes who David is, what does David do to get himself out of the situation?

A

David pretended to be insane.

27
Q

How many opportunities does David have to kill Saul, yet chooses not to. Why does David refuse to kill Saul? Use text references to defend your conclusions.

A

David has 2 opportunities to kill Saul but refuses to because he did not think it was his place to kill the Lord’s anointed. (26:11)

28
Q

How does Saul die?

A

He dies by putting himself on his sword because he did not want to die by the hands of the
Philistines.

29
Q

Is Saul repentant throughout the book of 1 Samuel? Yes or no? Why or why not? Use text references to support your conclusions.

A

Saul is not repentant throughout the book because though he says he is sorry for the way he behaves to David, his behavior never truly changes and he continues to try to kill David. (26:21)

30
Q

In 1 Samuel 13.14, Samuel tells Saul that God has chosen a man to replace Saul who is, “after his own heart…” Is David truly a man after God’s own heart? Use text references to defend your answer.

A

David is a man after God’s own heart as he does everything thinking of the Lord and not based on what he or others wants to do. (26:10)

31
Q

How does the story of 1 Samuel fit into the overall Plot of Scripture (God Redeeming All Things)? Use a minimum of 3 text references to support your conclusion.

A

The story of 1 Samuel fits into God redeeming all things because God gives Israel a king after his own heart after Saul proves to be a king of the people. (17:47) God helps the Israelites in battle against the Philistines with David who trusts in him to deliver the Philistines into his hand. (17:26) God rejects Saul as king and anoints David after his own heart to protect and save the Israelites from bad judgement and bring them closer to Him. (15:23)

Giving people good leadership and teaching them how to be faithful

32

Why did Saul do the sacrifice

A

people scattering bc philistines closing in, saul impatient and cares about what people think
