What is child protection ?
Activity undertaken to protect specific children who are suffering, or are at risk of suffering significant harm.
Who are children in need ?
Children who require additional support or services to achieve their full potential.

What are the three elements which must be present to define child abuse ?
Significant harm to child.
Carer has some responsibility for that harm.
Significant connection between carer’s responsibility for child and harm to child.
What is child abuse or neglect ?
Anything which those entrusted with care of child do, or fail to do which damages their prospects of safe and healthy development into adulthood.
What is GIRFEC ?
National practice model which creates shared -
- Organising and recording info about child.
- Discussing ways of addressing concerns about wellbeing.

GIRFEC - what are the SHANARRI indicators and concept of ‘wellbeing’ ?
Safe.

When can information be shared ?
- When safety is at risk.
- Where benefits of sharing info outweighs the public and individual’s interest in keeping info confidential.
What are the four categories of child abuse ?
Physical, emotional, neglect, sexual.
What are some of the contributing adult factors for child abuse ?
Drugs, alcohol, poverty, unemployment, martial stress, mental illness, disabled, domestic violence, step-parents, isolation, abused as child, unrealistic expectations.
What are some of the contributing child factors for child abuse ?
Crying, soiling, disability, unwanted pregnancy, failed expectations, wrong gender, product of coercive or commercial sex.
What are the three parenting capacity factors which lead to child abuse ?
Domestic abuse.
Drug and alcohol misuse.
Mental health issues.
At what age are children most vulnerable to child abuse ?
<5s - not at school yet and less opportunity for them to access other adults.
What are the 3 most vulnerable children the dentist should be aware of ?
Under 5s.
Irregular attenders.
Medical problems and disabilities.
What is the definition of dental neglect ?
Persistent failure to meet a child’s basic oral needs, likely to result in serious impairment of child’s oral or general health or development.
What are 3 stages in managing dental neglect ?
Preventative dental team management.
Preventative multi-agency management.
Child protection referral.
