what happened on 12th July?
- Necker’s dismissal inflamed tense situation as he was seen to be able to solve rioting due to high food prices
- Desmoulins’ speech encouraged armed revolt (claimed massacre of rev supporters planned)
- royal troops and customs posts attacked
- many royal troops joined people instead of withdrawing
- citizen’s militia set up to maintain order

14th July 1789
how did the storming of the Bastille start?
Parisians stole muskets/canon from Les Invalides & went to Bastille for the gunpowder stores there
what was the Bastille?
royal fortress & prison = symbol of royal power
what did the Bastille governor do?
De Launay refused to give any gunpowder & when a group got into the courtyard, ordered his men to fire = governor & 93 died
who stormed the Bastille?
sans-culottes - 250,000 joined first journée of the revolution
