1-Restrain Flashcards
Field of vision -predator
Usually have forward facing eyes/have field of vision directly in front
Field of vision- prey
Usually have eyes places on each side of skull, wide field of vision on each side and blind spot if approached directly from front.
Potential weapons
Teeth, claws, hooves, tails
4 fundamentals of restraint
- Behavior: species, breed, sex, age, territory, hierarchical position, prior experiences
- Medical procedure - periprocedure pain levels, duration, body location, degree of immobility required
- handler - level of experience, physical Strenght, availability of assistance
- Equipment/availability - ropes /leashes, towel/cat bags, leather gloves , cages/carriers, muzzles, commercial gauze, quick release pole , panels , barriers, squeeze cages
3-Types of restraint
- Psychological- least restrictive, used solely to supplement other methods. Used supplement to physical restraint.
Positive - reinforcement rewarding animal when it performs desired behavior , most effective /humane training method by rewarding animal during development of desired behavior, progression from imperfect to perfect performance
Negative reinforcement- reprimanding animal for negative behaviors
3-types of restraint
- Physical (manual /mechanical)
- Chemical - use of drugs ranging from tranquilizers to general anesthesia
•restraint choice when strict immobility needed , whenever pain is present or when handling a unpredictable/fractious animal
Fractious cat 2 weapons
Claws & teeth
- difficult cat has flatten ears , crouch down
Techniques for fractious cats-6
- Hide and seek- towel technique, throw blanket as you approach
- Kitty burrito - used for draws, injection, prevents cat from scratching, kicking
- The shield - when animal is feral, uses to wedge cat to back of cage thru bars
- Muzzle- will cover eyes and mouth. E- collar can also be fitted. Applied after towel or burrito technique
- Cat bag - acts like burrito except it has zipper to aid in accessing cat
- Stretch-cat is scruffier, placed later recumbent, hind limbs grasped in 3 finger fold, cat stretched out
Hold cat for venipuncture - jugular
Allows fattest blood draws since largest vein from which to draw blood
- site closest to teeth /front claws
- cat must cooperate
- grasp head in one hand. Stretch cat over edge of table holding body of cat against your arm
Hold cat for venipuncture -cephalic
In cats used mostly for intravenous catheter placement
- pts front leg must be extended thru procedure
- grasp head in one hand. Grasp behind elbow , extending arm. With thumb apply pressure to top of leg at elbow and roll skin to outside. Occluded vein which forces it to pop up.
Hold cat for venipuncture -femoral
Used w fractious cats
- later recumbecy, inside of bottom leg is accessed
- scruff cat/ place later recumbecy, karate chop position , apply pressure to bottom leg where it is attached to body while holding top leg tucked out of the way
Psychological restraint
Use of auditory/ visual commands. This is least restrictive type of restraint and is used combination with other types of restrain
Chemical restraint
The use of tranquilizers, sedatives and/or anesthesia to control an animal
Feral
In wild state , especially after escape from captivity or domestication
Fractious
Unruly , irritable , readily angered, quarrelsome
