What is a dissociative disorder?
psychological disorder characterized by a person’s thoughts, feelings, or behaviors being separated from conscious awareness and control and not explainable as mere forgetfullness
What is dissociative identity disorder?
person alternates among two or more distinct personality states only one of which interacts with other people at a given time
What is dissociative amnesia?
person has had at least one episode of forgetting some important personal information, creating gaps in memory that are usually related to severe stress or trauma
What is dissociative fugue?
dissociative disorder in which someone goes on a journey during which he or she cannot recall personal history prior to the journey
What is selective amnesia?
some events during a particular time period are forgotten
What is generalized amnesia?
persons whole lifetime is forgotten
What is continuous amnesia?
everything since a certain time is forgotten
What is systematized amnesia?
only particular categories of information are forgotten
What is depersonalization disorder?
person has recurring or persistent feelings of being cut off or detached from his or her body or mental processes as if observing them from the outside
What is derealization disorder?
person experiences a feeling that people or objects in the external world are not real
What is a personality disorder?
enduring, rigid set of personality traits that deviate from cultural norms, impairs functioning, and causes distress either to the person with the disorder or to those in his or her life
What are cluster A personality disorders?
paranoid, schizoid, and schizotypal personality disorders associated with irrational, withdrawn, cold, or suspicious behaviors
What are cluster B personality disorders?
antisocial, borderline, and narcissistic disorders associated with emotional, dramatic, and attention-seeking behaviors
What are cluster C personality disorders?
avoidant, dependent, and obsessive compulsive disorders associated with tense, anxious, and over-controlled behaviors
What is a paranoid personality disorder?
person mistrusts and misinterprets others motive and actions without sufficient cause, suspecting them of deceiving, harming, betraying, or attacking him or her
