1: Protozoans Flashcards
Describe the locomotion of the protozoans
Flagella
Cilia → metachronal waves
Pseudopodia → temporary extension of the body
In what 2 ways can protozoans aquire food?
Phagocytosis
Pinocytosis
How do protozoans reproduce?
Asexually
Give an example of an Amoebozoan and describe its lifecycle
Entamoeba histolytica:
- Humans ingest: from faeces, infected food/water, insects
- Organisms break down the intestinal wall and can make their way to the blood system
- Once in blood system, can go to liver, lungs / brain
- Kills 55,000/yr
What is a commensal protozoan?
Live on the surface of the body or at mucosa without harming human health
Give an example of an Apicomplexan
Plasmodium → causes malaria
Describe the lifecycle of Plasmodium
- Mosquito has sporozoites, when it bites human these enter the bloodstream, go to the liver
- They divide and penetrate the RBCs → intracellular parasite
- Now called trophozoites, inside RBCs they reproduce and burst out = fever symptom
- Trophozoites → gametocytes. Infected human is bitten by mosquito they sexually reproduce in gut and they move to the salivary glands
= cycle repeats
