animals lived to give food to people- bones given back to earth as a sign of respect

Land
Land
largest concentration of NA in the Great Plains. known as ‘Plain Indians’
most tribes nomadic, following buffalo herd which they depended on for everything
Resources
buffalo- key part of existence, sacred to them. Used every part, weren’t wasteful. (bones, skin, fat, dung)
How was NA position under threat after 1865?
Number of buffalos greatly reduced (white settlers and railway companies advancing across Great Plains)
New settlement restricted ability of NA to follow what remained of herds. Plain Indians way of life destroyed.
unity between tribes?
No unity between tribes until the end of the period. Some tribes co-operated with American government whilst some maintained hostility.
Some fight against the government, some tribes aided the government against other tribes.
