1. Newton's Laws of Motion Flashcards
What is force?
A push or pull that alters, or tends to alter the state of motion of a body
What is velocity?
The rate of motion in a particular direction/ the rate of change in displacement
What is momentum?
The quantity of motion possessed by a moving body
What is acceleration?
The rate of change of velocity
What is the name of Newton’s first law?
the law of inertia
What is Newton’s first law?
A body continues in a state of rest or in uniform velocity unless acted on by an external force
Example of Newton’s first law
A centre pass in netball -> ball remains in the centre’s hand until a force is applied to pass the ball
What is the name of Newton’s second law?
The Law of Acceleration
What is Newton’s second law?
When a force acts on an object, the rate of change of momentum experienced by the object is proportional to the size of the force and takes place in the direction in which the force acts
Example of Newton’s second law
A netball shooter close to the hoop will only need to apply a small force compared to a shooter further from the hoop who will need to apply more force as more momentum is needed
What is the name of Newton’s third law?
The Law of Reaction
What is Newton’s third law?
For every force that’s exerted by one body on another, there is an equal and opposite force exerted by the second body on the first
Example of Newton’s third law
Netball bounce pass -> ball travels down towards the floor, downward action force on the ground, that in turn exerts an upward action force on the ball and the ball bounces up
What is biomechanics?
The study of human movement and the effect of force and motion on sports performance.
