Audio
Sound that has been recorded. Eg. “I have recorded my vocal part as an audio track.”
MIDI
Musical Instrument Digital Interface. A way of recording and playing information that controls synths.
Microphone
An electronic device for capturing sound and converting it into audio signal. Doesn’t record music!
Multi-tracking
The process of recording more than one track on top of each other so they play back simultaneously.
Mixing
In music technology; producer controls the dynamic levels (volume) of each track to get an even mix.
Sampling
In music technology: where an actual recording from a pre-existing track is used in a new song.
Effects
Music technology processes you can add to audio tracks, to alter or enhance certain characteristics.
Mashup
A composition created by blending two or more pre-existing songs, usually using technology.
Remix
A type of arrangement created using music technology; nearly always in a dance/electronica style.
Synthesiser
Electrical instruments that create (or mimic) musical sounds and instruments. Eg., keyboards, Sibelius
