What’s the difference between grammar and syntax?
Syntax and grammar are related but different concepts in language.
Grammar is the overall system of rules that govern a language, including syntax, morphology (word formation), semantics (meaning), and phonetics (sounds). It’s the broad set of rules that define how a language functions.
Syntax is a subset of grammar that specifically deals with sentence structure—how words are arranged to form proper sentences. It governs things like word order and sentence construction.
Example:
Grammar mistake:
❌ She don’t like pizza. (Incorrect verb conjugation – should be doesn’t)
Syntax mistake:
❌ Pizza like she doesn’t. (Incorrect word order)
So, syntax is about structure, while grammar is the full set of rules for using a language correctly.
