Very - 1 in 4 globally
Accounts for half of cases of anaemia
Who does it affect?
All ages
Most commonly infants, elderly and pregnant women
What causes it?
Lack of iron intake
Heavy periods
Pregnancy
Internal bleeding
What risk factors are there?
Extremes of age
Female sex
Pregnancy
What signs may the patient have on examination?
Conjunctival pallor
Pale palmar creases
Angular stomatitis
Pallor
What other conditions might present similarly?
Acute GI bleed
Rupture of vascular aneurysm
Malnutrition
Trauma (fracture)
How would you investigate?
FBC Abdo USS Joint X-rays CT Upper endoscopy / colonoscopy
What treatments are there?
Treat underlying cause
Iron supplements
Diet change
What complications are there?
Prone to infection
Heart failure, tachycardia
Complications in pregnancy
