What are lymphomas?
Disorders caused by malignant proliferation of lymphocytes
These accumulate in the lymph nodes, peripheral blood or organs
Hodgkin’s and non-Hodkin’s
What is the difference between Hodgkin’s and non-Hodgkin’s?
In Hodgkin’s, Reed-Sternberg cells (mirror-image nuclei) are found
RS cells are derived from B-lymphocytes
How does Hodgkin’s lymphoma present?
Peaks in young adults and elderly
Enlarged, non-tender rubbery superficial lymph nodes
25% have fever, weight loss, night sweats, lethargy
How does non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma present?
Superficial lymphadenopathy
Extranodal disease depending on type (gut, oropharynx)
Translocation occurs between which two chromosomes in follicular lymphoma?
14 and 18
