1. Introduction to SN Flashcards
Special assessment clinic is devoted to?
To anyone with special needs. This includes anyone struggling in a conventional eye exam. Including people with learning disabilities, wheel chair, deaf.
Why are children tests?
Early detection = better prognosis.
And less likely to affect patients learning. Early treatment = better prevention.
If someone wants to test at your practice but you do not have the equipment, can you say no to the px?
If your practice doesn’t have the requirements or if the optom is incompetent to offer this service, refer the patient to a practice or optometrist that offers this service instead of saying no.
What is repeatability and how much is it in sphere, VA & cyl?
This is how much difference in refractive error contributes to real change.
1. <0.50DS
2. More than 1 line in VA
3. Cyl- depends on sphere
3 instances in which equivalent sphere is needed?
- When prescribing CL or dispending swimming googles (Cheaper).
- When patient is being checked for the first time and they have a really high RX- the prescription is slowly moved up- allowing px to adjust.
- When trying to identify the difference an rx is going to have on a child’s binocularity.
Difference between + and - Rx on a patients squint, with explanation?
+ lenses reduce accommodation, reducing convergence (because eyes are diverging) and reducing size of squint.
- lenses increase accommodation at near, hence patient will converge more making squint worse.
To work this out equivalent sphere is calculated first.
4 instances when diopters is converted to cm?
- When amplitude of accommodation is calculated.
- Identify reading power.
- Calculating where myopes see clearly.
- Neutralisation.
2 examples of why it is important to have a rough idea of parent’s Rx?
- Refractive errors are linked to heredity.
- If parent’s do not have a refractive error you need to explain them what the childs refractive error means.
Average Rx of a child with downs syndrome is?
+5.00
Myopia means - long or short sighted?
Short sighted
How to explain hyperopia to parents?
Long sighted- difficult to see things at near but can see things far away easily. This is corrected by wearing + lenses. Wearing plus lenses helps focus light on the retina- instead of behind
5 times where retinoscopy is more useful at detecting something compared to any other equipment?
- Keratoconus
- Cataract
- Retinoblastoma
- Coloboma
- Pupil reflex
Disadvantage of working distance lenses in the frame?- 6
- More reflections
- Additional aberrations
- Less space on trail frame for other lenses
- BVD is different
- Lower reflex
- Heavy frame
Why is BVD important?
Higher powered lenses are affected by BVD As it changes the power of the lens.
