what are alternative jobs in the animal care industry?
laboratory technicians and lab tech assistants, pet shop attendant, sales (sell to veterinarians or owners), pet sitter, dog trainer, animal control officer, animal shelter aide, zookeeper, and wildlife rehabilitator
who do laboratory technicians work for? what do they do? what is the education requirement?
for biomedical research companies and educational institutions. lab techs provide quality care to research animals and perform radiographs, take blood samples, and assist in surgery. most research facilities offer training programs and require passing of a certification exam
who offers certification exams for vet laboratory technicians?
the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS). to be eligible to take the exam, one must have prior experience working with lab animals in their vet tech programs
what does an animal control officer do? who do they work for? what is the education required?
they are responsible for stray animal control, enforce animal license and leash laws, and investigate cases of animal abuse and cruelty. they work for state or county agencies. training programs offered by humane societies (and some state colleges) several weeks up to a month to complete.
what do zookeepers do? what is the education required?
they feed, observe, and clean captive wild animalsβ cages, and develop and present educational programs to the public. they usually work only with one or two different speciees. a four year college degree in zoology or biology is required
what do wildlife rehabilitator do? what is the educational requirement?
they care for injured and orphaned wild animals and work closely with a veterinarian. most states require a license to do this job
