1. Intro to Fixed Flashcards
What are the three patient conditions that complicate treatment
- Medical issues
- Money
- Time (availability)
T/F You can do a prophy before a comp oral if the patient’s hygiene is so poor your can’t properly evaluate the teeth
F- You can’t charge as a prophy it is a full mouth debridement (for comp eval and dx)
(Amalgam/composite) marginal defects should be treated more aggressively and why
composite because amalgam seals with corrosion products
The diameter of the explorer tip is proportional to what
the opening that can be detected
The best way to evaluate the existance of an open margin is how
visual inspection + sharp explorer
What are the advantages of supragingival margins
- Can be finished without soft tissue trauma
- Easily kept plaque free
- Impressions more easily made
- Easier restoration evaluation
- They are in enamel (subgingival=dentin)
- Exposure to fluoride and saliva
When can a subgingival margin be justified
- Dental caries, cervical erosion or restorations extend subgingivally and crown lengthening is not indicated
- Proximal contact extends to the gingival crest
- Additional retention/resistance needed
- Hide a MCC margin (high lip line)
- Root sensitivity can’t be controlled by more conservative means
- Modification of axial contour(i.e provide undercut for retention of RPD clasp)
Why do subgingival margins need to be more precise
more susceptible to inflammation and recession
If perio surgery is needed, what should happen to the sulcular space?
Should have a postsurgical depth of 2 mm should NOT be eliminated completely
How long does the gingival crest take to stabilize after perio surgery
20 weeks
Extension of margins with _mm of the alveolar crest leads to resorption
1.5 mm
Margins should follow the contour of the gingiva _ on the middle and _ interpreximally
apical… incisal
Which has a greater risk of developing perio disease (over/undercountour) horizontal discrepancy
overcontoured
(Vertical/horizontal) crown margin discrepancy predisposes to caries
vertical
How do you evaluate an FDP for loose retainers
- Pull up on the connector with the explorer
- Push the retainer down with your finger
- Look for bubbling of saliva at the margin
