Q

What is innate immunity?

What are the properties of innate immune cells (6)

A

The first line of defense of the immune system. We are born with the genes that code for the innate immune cells and they target pathogens.. They are molecular pattern specific which means that they recognize specific patterns that are common to many foreign cells. These patterns are called PAMP, MAM

Properties

1) High phagocytic activity
2) Generate/secrete tocix molecules to kill/inhibit pathogens
3) Attract more immune cells
4) Tissue repair
5) Mobility
6) Link to adaptive immunity

Q

Name the 6 innate immune cells and briefly name their function

A

1) Macrophages (monocytes)
2) Neutrophiles ( 1st response, ROS, NETs)
3) Baos/Esosino/mastocytes (high histamine granule secretion, allergic response)
4) Microglia (brain immune response)
5) Astrocytes (BHE + brain immune response once activated by microglia)
6) DC (APC)

Q

Discuss the function and properties of macrophages and why you choose to speak about this cell types.

A

1) WHY? : I find macrophages particularly interesting because they can be activated to mature into pro or anti-inflamm cells.

Macrophages are tissue innate cells that that are derived from monocytes that have invaded a tissue.

Once the monocyte is derived into a macrophage, the macrophage can be actived to become cytotoxic (M1) or M2 which are immune suppressive and promote tissue repair.

Their functions are phagocytosis, CK production and oxidative activity.

When deregulated, they can become ‘‘foamy macrophages’’ that clear cholestrol and cause artherosclerotic plaques.
