What are 4 things to examine for the lids and lashes?
- Relative position of eyelids (ptosis present?)
- Apposition of lids on globe (ectropion/entropion?)
- Appearance of lashes (trichiasis/blepharitis?)
- Signs of inflammatory disease (redness/swelling?)
What is ectropion?
Lid everted away from the globe
What is entropion?
Lid inverted toward the globe
What is trichiasis?
Lashes turned inward causing irritation to the globe
How does blepharitis present in the eyelashes?
Scaly/flaky depositions in the lashes
What is the term for redness present in the bulbar conjunctiva?
Injection
What are 3 classifications of injection?
- Diffuse
- Sectored
- Localized
How is the superior palpebral conjunctiva assessed?
Via lid eversion
What do follicles represent in the palpebral conjunctiva and what are they often caused by?
Focal hyperplasia of lymphoid tissue
Common reaction to viral infections
What do papillae in the palpebral conjunctiva represent and what are they often caused by?
Infiltrations of inflammatory cells
Common reaction to bacterial disease and allergies
How do follicles and papillae differ in appearance?
Follicles are white, milky and translucent
Papillae are red
What is hyphema?
Presence of blood in the anterior chamber
What is hypopyon?
Presence of exudative material in the anterior chamber
What are 2 types of abnormal pigmentation in the iris?
- Pigment hyperplasia/hypertrophy
