(1) Eukaryotes & Prokaryotes Flashcards
What is the main difference between a eukaryotic and prokaryotic cell?
Eukaryotic cells have a nucleus whereas prokaryotic cells don’t
What type of cell is a bacterial cell
Prokaryotic
Give the function of the plasma membrane in a bacterial cell
Plasma membrane: (Present in animal, plant and bacterial cell) controls what enters and exits the cell
Give the function of the cell wall in a bacterial cell
Cell Wall: Made up of chitin not cellulose and it supports the cell
Give the function of the Capsule in a bacterial cell
Capsule : is a protein capsule that provides the cell with more protection
Give the function of the cytoplasm in a bacterial cell
Cytoplasm: where most chemical reactions take place (Present in all types of cells)
Give the function of the free DNA
Free DNA: (wiggly lines in the middle) the free DNA floats in the cytoplasm of the cell as there is no nucleus
Give the function of the plasmid in a bacterial cell
Plasmid: Ring of DNA that contains extra genetic information. The information is not essential for survival but it does help the cell
Give the function of ribosomes in a bacterial cell
Ribosomes: in the cytoplasm where proteins are made
Give the function of the flagella in a bacterial cell
Flagella: Structure that allows the cell to move around. Some have more than 1 flagella, it depends on the cell
Give 3 examples of eukaryotic cells
Plant, animal and fungal cells
Give one example of a prokaryotic cell
Bacterial cell
