1. Electrical circuits Flashcards
1
Q
Series Circuit
A
Series Circuit
- has no branches
- current can only flow in one path
2
Q
What is an electrical current?
A
An electrical current is:
- a flow of electrons round a circuit
- the unit of electrical current is called Amp
3
Q
What is an Ammeter used for?
A
An Ammeter is used for:
- the current in a circuit
4
Q
What is the current is a series circuit?
A
- in a series circuit the current is always THE SAME
5
Q
Parallel Circuits
A
Parallel Circuits
- contain branches so the current splits
- the current in the BRANCHES adds up to the TOTAL CURRENT LEAVING THE CELL
6
Q
Potential energy (Voltage)
A
Potential Energy
- the cell has a store of CHEMICAL energy
- the chemical energy is transferred to ELECTRICAL energy by the electrons passing out of the cell
- the energy type changes depending on what sort of COMPONENT you have eg if it is LAMP the energy transfer will be LIGHT energy & THERMAL energy
7
Q
Potential Difference (V) is measure by a:
A
Potential Difference is measured by:
- a VOLT METER
- eg if have 1 lamp 9V - pd of lamp 9V
- eg if have 2 lamps the pd will be 4.5 and the lamps will be dimmer
- eg is have 2 lamps one 3.5 and another 5.5 the second one will be brighter
8
Q
What is equivalent Resistance?
A
Equivalent Resistance
- when two resistors and replaced by 1 eg 100 ohm and 50 ohm is replaced by 150ohm resistor
