1. Ecosystems Flashcards
Habitat
The place where an organism lives
Biodiversity
The variety of species in an ecosystem
Population
All the organisms of one species in a habitat
Community
All the living organisms in a habitat
Ecosystem
All living organisms in a habitat and the non-living components with which the organisms interact
Consumer
An organism which eats other organisms
Carnivore
Eat only animal material
Herbivore
Eat only plant material
Omnivore
Eat both plant and animal material
Producer
Organisms which make their own food through photosynthesis (plants)
Species
A group of interbreeding organisms whose offspring are fertile
Food chains and Food webs
Show the transfer of energy between organisms
Arrows in a food chain or food web
Show the direction of energy flow
Niche
The role an organism plays in its ecosystem
Competition
Occurs when resources are in short supply
Interspecific competition
Competition between members of different species competing for one or a few similar resources they require
Intraspecific competition
Competition between members of the same species competing for all of the same resources they require and is therefore much more intense than interspecific competition
Plants compete for
Light, nutrients and space
Animals compete for
Food, habitat and mates
Predator
An animal which hunts other animals
Prey
An animal which is hunted by other animals
