1 - Direct pulp capping Flashcards
1
Q
When is direct pulp capping indicated?
A
- surrounding dentine is sound
- pulp tissue is red and homogenous, free from yellow liquified areas which indicate pulpal necrosis
- no dentine chips present on the wound
- haemostasis can be achieved within 2-3 minutes
2
Q
What can be used to encourage haemostasis of a pulpal exposure?
A
- mild disinfectant
- eg chlorohexadine or 1% sodium hypochlorite
3
Q
What are some examples of types of materials used for pulp capping?
A
- chemically pure calcium hydroxide
- calcium hydroxide containing bases
- mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA)
- calcium-silicate cements
4
Q
What is an example of a brand that is used for direct pulp capping?
A
Dycal
5
Q
What occurs after the direct pulp cap has been placed?
A
- mineralised tissue forms to repair the pulpal exposure
- this tissue is not tubular (unlike dentine)
- this mineralised tissue is laid down by fibroblasts and should be consider reparative - NOT regenerative
6
Q
What is calcification of the root canals indicative of?
A
- bacteria being present within the root canal system
- pulpectomy would be indicated
