Define a macule
Discolouration in the skin which is not elevated
What is a papule
Elevated discolouration of the skin that is less than 0.5cm diameter
What is a nodule
Elevated discolouration of the skin that is more than 0.5cm in diameter
What is a plaque
Elevated area of skin more than 2cm in diameter
What is a vesicle
Blister <0.5cm
What is a bulla
Blister >0.5cm
What is a pustule
Blister containing evident pus
What is a cyst
Closed cavity or sac lined by epithelium
What is a wheal
Oedema of the dermis
What are scales
Accumulation of keratin that flakes off
What is an ulcer
Loss of epidermis and dermis
What is an erosion
Loss of epidermis
What is a fissure
Split through epidermis and dermis
What is a verrucous/wart
Collection of keratin
What is ecchymosis
brusing due to leakage of blood
What is a patch
Similar to macule (Non-elevated discolouration) but textured
What are petechiae
Small purpura (< 1mm)
What causes Purpura
Leakage of RBC from blood vessels followed by their destruction
What is a pustule
Pus in the epidermis or derma-epidermal junction
What is telangiectasia
Dilation of superficial blood vessels
How can the different skin types be graded
Fitzpatrick skin types
What is fitzpatrick type I
- Highly sun sensitive
- Always burns
- Never tans
(Red Head With Freckles)
What is fitzpatrick type 2
- Very sun sensitive
- Burns easily
- Rarely tans
(Caucascians with fair skin and fair hair)
What is fitzpatrick type 3
- Sun sensitive
- May burn
- Can tan to light brown
