Q

Why are greenhouse gases an important part of the atmosphere?

A

Without them the planet would be very cold, as all the heat captured from the sun would be lost

Q

Describe the greenhouse effect

A

The suns energy passes into our atmosphere, and converted into heat energy. It is then reflected off the surface of the earth, with some heat being absorbed, and usually travel back out into space

However, because humans have added more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, the reflected heat does not travel out into space, but instead reflects back down onto the earth again. It can do this multiple times. Therefore our planet absorbs more heat, slowly warming the climate

Q

What is an effective way to gather climate change evidence?

A

By taking ice core samples, which contains air from whenever the ice was formed. From this scientists can discover the temperature that year and the gases present
This is an easy and accurate way to graph the changes

Q

What are some effects of climate change?

A
Warmer climate
Farm produce will grow earlier in the year, and more quickly
Drier climate
Diseases will spread more easily
Rising sea levels
Warmer oceans - effects marine life
Polar ice is melting
More storms and stronger storms

Q

What are the impacts of climate change on a developing country?

A

Bangladesh - 95% of its land is only 10m above sea level
Rivers levels are rising
Monsoons are common - will get stronger

Q

What impacts will this have on humans in Bangladesh?

A

A third of Bangladesh will soon be underwater, which means a loss of farmland, food prices will rise, population of malnourished will also rise, no produce to trade, poorer than it already is
People will have to move inland, which causes overcrowding and slums to form, which increases the spread of disease
The country is very poor so can’t do anything to help prevent climate change, or even reduce its affects
Poor working conditions is also increasing because of overcrowding due to rising sea levels. Employers can therefore exploit those who are most in need of work

Q

What are the impacts of climate change on a developed population?

A

Rising sea levels is affecting Florida too, with the loss of land causing people to have to move out of homes
Water supply and sewage systems are often being destroyed by bad storms, which is contaminating not just people but wildlife too
The salty sea water is destroying the Everglades (grassy slow moving river) which is a massive tourist attraction, so the total economic losses could eventually add up to $1 billion, rare wildlife and plants will also be lost
Hurricanes and storm surges are also increasing in size and frequency, causing an alarming amount of destruction in coastal areas
More intense rainfall incasing flooding which is affecting farmers land, which could cause food shortages

Q

Give examples of how to manage climate change in developing countries

A

Replace rice farming with shrimp farming, which will ensure the country has enough food
Give £150 million to aid them in ‘climate proofing’ agriculture, by looking into better crop strains and sources of fresh water

Q

Give examples of how to manage climate change in developed countries

A

Adding protective beach dunes, prevent water from flooding coastline
Having water storage kept underground, further inland, which means it won’t be affected by the sea water
Encouraging the use of environmental energies, so the sea levels won’t rise any further

Q

How can YOU can help prevent climate change?

A

By using energy saving LED bulbs
Turning things off when they aren’t being used
Buying locally produced food
Recycle, and limit plastic (and any) waste
Use public transport/ walk/ cycle
Try not to use plastic bags, or any packaging

Become vegetarian

16
Q

Why do whole nations need to change, and not just individuals?

A

The issue is so widespread

If only a few people helped it would hardly make a dent in the amount of harmful emissions released globally

17
Q

How are the government are trying to manage climate change?

A

Big energy companies are being made to pay a tax for every ton of coal they burn
Energy companies are being made to provide more energy efficient deals for less
Owners of cars which produce high levels of fuel fumes are being made to pay more on their road tax, than those with low fume emitting vehicles

18
Q

Why is getting countries to become more eco-friendly so difficult?

A

The money, time and effort governments would have to put into it is too much of a commitment for them
Countries may be too poor to afford this, or may not think it is the best thing for their country
There is also no way for laws to be enforced (The Paris Agreement)
