1) Class Hepatopsida (Liverworts) *Ricciocarpus* and *Riccia* Flashcards
1
Q
1) List two features of Ricciocarpus and Riccia.
A
- Apical growth & dichotomous development.
- Spongy internal tissue with compact storage tissue.
2
Q
2) Rhizoids?
A
- Aquatic plants lack rhizoids.
- Plants growing on soil have rhizoids on ventral surface.
3
Q
3) Features of male & female gametangia?
A
- In Ricciocarpus, male & female gametangia on dorsal surface (dorsal furrow).
- Male gametangia (antheridia) produce biflagellate sperm.
- Female gametangia (archegonia) is flask-shaped. At maturity, it contains single egg.
4
Q
4) Structure of archegonia & antheridia (3 points).
A
- Both composed of fertile cells surrounded by sterile cells.
- Antheridia consist of a stalk & sterile jacket which surround spermatogenous tissue.
- Archegonial neck has six rows of neck cells.
5
Q
5) Type of sexual reproduction?
A
Oogamous
6
Q
6) Process of reproduction?
A
- Zygote develops into mass of diploid tissues (sporophyte) within archegonium.
- Enlarged archegonium is called calyptra.
- Sporocytes (diploid cells) divide meiotically twice to give tetrad of **meiospores **(haploid cells).
- Meiospores develop thick walls, separate, and are shed by decay of the gametophyte. They develop to new plants.
- Sporophytes of liverworts, hornworts, and mosses are borne within the gametophyte (not free living).
