1- Cells of the Nervous System Flashcards
Golgi Staining
Potassium dichromate and silver nitrate used
Neurons and glia take up silver grains
Neuron Filling
Can trace patterns of neurons
i.e. GFP dye packaged into vesicles, into synapse
Glial Cells
Supports neurons
Not electrically excitable
1:1 ratio between glial cells and neurons
Schwann Cells
PNS
Wrap around individual axons
Important for axon regeneration
Oligodendrocytes
In CNS
Surround multiple axons (have several processes)
Astrocytes
Most abundant glial cell in CNS
Mechanical support of neurons- anchors to blood capillaries
Metabolic support (glycogen)
Regulation of molecules in extracellular fluid
Can have inflammatory response after injury
Microglia
Smallest glial cell
Immune cell of the brain
Activated by inflammation (transformed to macrophage which is phagocytic)
Ependymal Cells
Line ventricular system
Produce CSF
Responsible for making stem cells
Choroid Plexus
Specialized epndyma that produces CSF
