1) Basic Concepts Flashcards
Use the ‘Basic Concepts’ card to test knowledge on the different ways to represent compounds.
Rate knowledge 1-5.
Define homologous series.
A series of organic compounds having the same functional group but with each successive member differing by CH2.
What are the three ways hydrocarbons can be classified?
- Aliphatic.
- Alicyclic.
- Aromatic.
Describe an aromatic hydrocarbon.
A compound containing a benzene ring.
Define hydrocarbon.
A compound containing carbon and hydrogen only.
Use the ‘Basic Concepts’ card to test knowledge on the different functional groups.
Rate knowledge 1-5.
What are structural isomers?
Compounds with the same molecular formula but different structural formula.
What are the two types of covalent bond fission?
- Homolytic fission.
- Heterolytic fission.
What is meant by a radical?
A species with an unpaired electron.
What are used to represent species that are radicals in mechanisms?
Dots, •.
What are ‘curly arrows’ used to show?
The movement of a pair of electrons.
What happens in an addition reaction?
Two reactants join together to form one product.
What happens in a substitution reaction?
An atom or group of atoms is replaced by a different atom or group of atoms.
What happens in an elimination reaction?
Involves the removal of a small molecule to form a larger one.
Define homolytic fission.
When a covalent bond breaks by homolytic fission, each of the bonded atoms takes one of the shared pair of electrons from the bond.
