(1)Auditory-verbal comp: primary aspects and Wernicke's Flashcards
1
Q
Two primary aspects of auditory-verbal comprehension
A
- word recognition
- comprehension of word meaning
- word recognition mediated by middle & posterior superior temporal gyrus
2
Q
Primary characteristics of Wernicke’s aphasia
A
- Impaired speech comprehension
- Production of meaningless speech
- Poor awareness of language deficits
- Neuropsych functioning
3
Q
re. WA: Impaired speech comprehension
A
- does not accurately follow simple instructions
- does not accurately match heard words to pictures
4
Q
re. WA: Production of meaningless speech
A
- speech is fluent
- produces high volume of syllables
- intonation generally intact
- “appears to be grammatical” i.e. uses function words: the, but
- few content words
- paraphasias
- can not repeat accurately
- expressive deficits make important to test comprehension with non-speech responses i.e. motor responses
5
Q
re. WA: poor awareness of language deficits
A
“Turn taking” intact
6
Q
re. WA: neuropsych functioning
A
- auditory association cortex of posterior superior temporal gyrus - i.e. Wernicke’s area - recognizes the sounds of words
- thought that Wernicke’s area is the location of “memories” of sequences of sounds that constitute words
