1. Atomic Structure and the Periodic Table Flashcards
Atom
The smallest part of an element
Molecule
Made of a fixed number of atoms covalently bonded together
Proton/Neutron/Electron: Position Charge Mass
Proton: Nucleus, +1, 1
Neutron: Nucleus, 0, 1
Electron: Shells, -1, (negligible)
Atomic Number
The number of protons in an atom
Mass Number
The number of protons and neutrons in an atom
Isotopes
Atoms with the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons
Relative atomic mass (Ar)
The average mass of an atom compared to 1/12 the mass of carbon-12
Calculating Ar
(Mass x abundance) + (Mass x abundance)/100
Electronic Configuration up to 20
2.8.8.2
Metal properties
Conduct Electricity
Have oxides which are basic, reacting with acids to give a salt and water
Non-Metal properties
Do not conduct electricity
Have oxides which are acidic or neutral
Elements in the same group have
Same number of electrons in outer shell
-Have similar properties
Why do noble gases not readily react
They are inert as they have a full outer shell of electrons
