1-Anterior Abdominal Wall Flashcards
Boundaries of the abdomen?
Inferior thoracic aperture to the superior margin of the pelvis
Posteriorly, the abdominal cavity is bounded by:?
Lumbar vertebrae, psoas, iliacus and quadratus lumborum Also serratus anterior and latissimus dorsi
Layers of the anterolateral abdominal wall?
Skin, camper’s fascia, scarpa’s fascia, muscle
What lies deep to the muscles of the anterior abdominal wall?
Transversalis fascia
Name the regions of the abdomen
Name
Origin of external oblique
posterior surface of ribs 5-12 (lower 8 ribs)
Origin and insertion of internal oblique
Thoracolumbar fascia of lower back, anterior 2/3 of iliac crest and lateral 2/3 of inguinal ligament
Inserts into linea alba and inferior borders of ribs 10-12
Origin of transversus abdominis
From costal margin, lumbar fascia, anterior 2/3 of iliac crest and lateral third of inguinal ligament
Inserts into linea alba, pubic crest and pectineal line
Origin of rectus abdominis
Pubic crest and pubic symphysis to costal cartilages of ribs 5-7 and xiphoid process
Arrangement of the rectus sheaths
Above the arcuate line, internal oblique splits to envelope rectus abdominis completely, with external oblique anterior/superficial to it and transversus abdominis deep to it
Below arcuate line - all 3 sheet muscles run superficial to rectus abdominis, so there is no posterior rectus sheath
Where is the arcuate line?
Halfway between umbilicus and pubic symphysis
