1-4: Motor Development 4 (Fine Motor Development in the First Year) Flashcards
Aspects of fine motor development
- Reaching
- Object manipulation/grasp
- Anticipatory grasping
How does reaching begin?
W/ ballistic strategies
How does reaching change over time
- Movement sequencing changes w/ experience, practice, and postural control
- Bilateral precedes unilateral reach
- Adapt reaching strategy in 1st year (i.e. different sized objects)
When does vision influence reaching?
B/t 5-9 months
Relationship b/t postural control/proximal stability and fine motor development
As posture and stability go up, fine motor improves
Development of object manipulation and grasp
- Fist –> open hand
- Volitional grasp –> volitional release
- Ulnar grasp –> radial grasp
- Gross control –> fine/distal control
Development of fine motor skills through the first year 0-3 months
Hands mostly closed
Development of fine motor skills through the first year 0-4 months
Reflexive grasp
Development of fine motor skills through the first year 2-7 months
Clutches object via ulnar grasp
Development of fine motor skills through the first year 4 months
Hands to midline
Development of fine motor skills through the first year 4-8 months
- Partial thumb opposition to grasp cube
- Transfers objects hand to hand
Development of fine motor skills through the first year 5-9 months
Rakes tiny objects into ulnar grasp
Development of fine motor skills through the first year 6-7 months
Radial palmar grasp, using grasp, using thumb to grasp object into palm
Development of fine motor skills through the first year7-9 months
Volitional release of object
Development of fine motor skills through the first year 8 months
Tiny objects held b/t thumb and side of index finger (lateral scissor)
