Absolute construction
A verbal phrase that is acting as a modifier but is not modifying any particular part of the sentence.
EX.Considering the location, the house is a pretty good deal.
Allusion
A reference to a historical person, place, or event outside the story.
Assonance
Repetition of the same sound in words close to each other.
EX. Or hear old triton blow his wreathed horn.
Apostrophe
A figure of speech in which the speaker or writer addresses someone or something who Is either present or absent
EX. Oh, Joe DiMaggio,where did you go
Cliche
Is an expression, idea,or element of artistic work that has been overused to the point of loosing its meaning or effect.
Description
A statement, picture in words, or account that describes.
Diction
Style of speaking or writting as dependent upon choice of words.
Denotation
The literal dictionary meaning of a word.
Grotesque
Distorting the natural to a way that seems over exaggerated
Internal monologue
Internal experience of a character (their inner voice)
Logos
Logical or fact in a piece of writting
Ethos
Ethical part of writting that shows the type of person you are.
Pathos
Emotional part of a piece of writting that gets the audience to connect emotionally with a topic.
Pacing
The manipulation of time.
Periodic sentence
Withholds the main meaning of a sentence until the end.
EX. In opening minds, installing values, and creating opportunities,education has no equal.
Prose
The ordinary form of spoken or written language.
Ridicule
Words or action intended to evoke contemptuous laughter or feeling toward a person or thing.
Simile
A comparison of two or more things using the like or as.
EX. As soft as the inside of a rose.
Style
The way a writer writes and is determined by diction, sentence structure and tone.
Slanting
A point of view attitude or opinion to write or tell so as to appeal to a particular interest
Narration
The act of relating a sequence of events.
Transitions
A word phrase sentence or group of sentences that relates a proceeding topic to a succeeding one or that smoothly connects parts of a a speech of piece of writing.
Thesis
A proposition maintained or defended in argument
