1 Flashcards
What are examples of oral dosageforms?
Tablets, capsules, orally dissolving tablets, sublingual tablets, solutions, suspensions, elixirs
What is a diluent?
What are examples?
Increases the bulk of the tablet for ease of manufacturing, handling and swallowing
Microcrystalline cellulose, lactose anhydrous, starch, dextrose
What are binders?
Impart cohesiveness to formulation
Bind power particles into granules during granulation
Bind granules into tablet during compression
Ex: starch, gelatin
What are disintegrants?
Promotes tablet disintegration—> rapid uptake of water, swelling, increase in tablet porosity
Ex: starch, cellulose, crosspovidone
What are lubricants?
Why does content and blending time need to be controlled?
What are examples?
Aid in tablet ejection
Reduces friction between die and tablet
To avoid coating of drug powder with waxes, increase of dissolution time & decrease bioavailability
Magnesium stearate, talc, stearic acid
What are glidants?
Improve the flow of powders
Promotes uniformity of dosage form weight
Can affect dissolution & bioavailability (talc, colloidal silicon dioxide)
