Active Listening
A conscious effort to listen and understand another person. Golden rule - think about how you want to be listened to. Helps the client feel worthy appreciated and respected.
Assertive innerductions
The helper assertively innerdeuces self and arranges for therapeutic one on one
Arranging the environment
The helper assertively arranges the seating, distances and angles for optimum interaction.
Offering self
The student nurse offers time, interest, and availability to the client.
Asking permission
Honors autonomy. Allows client to choose and empowers client role in decision-making and sharing.
Broad openings
Broad Openings are open ended questions that encourage a patient to talk about his illness or experience of needs. Shows that client had the lead in the discussion. Broad opening may help Client to initiate area for discussion.
One down communication
The helper takes the role of the learner (role reversal) and asks the patient to teach him or her symptoms or responses to medications she or he is experiencing first hand.
Exploring
Asking purposeful questions that help clients talk about experiences, feelings, and behaviors, help to make sense of the present, and learn from the past.
Focusing
Concentrates attention on a single point out of several mentioned by the patient. It also may seek a specific example of a general idea.
Placing in time
Helps to establish chronologically or sequence of events that enhance perspective and understanding of cause and effect. It also can identify periods of behavior that are repeated.
Seeking clarification
Helps client and nurse to clarify thoughts and come to shared understanding of communications
Asking for feelings and emotions
Helps relate the story to moods and emotional pain that may be at the root of their problems. It is useful in distinguishing thinking and feeling by asking for an expression of emotion.
Reflecting
Direct clients words, statements, questions, feelings, and ideas back to the client. It encourages clients to except their own thoughts and feelings. It encourages the clients to think of themselves as capable people. Hopeful to use when the client is asking you for advice.
Restating/mirror clients words
Repeating with the client said in similar words. May use some of the same words. This lets clients now he or she has communicated the message effectively. This encourages client to continue to share. However, if the client feels misunderstood he or she can clarify thoughts and feelings.
4 elements of a Suicide assessment.
- Assess for clues
- Ask patient if he or she is thinking of suicide
- Ask if they have a plan and or history suicide attempts
- Evaluate the suicide plan
