1 Flashcards
Population?
Entire collection of possible measurements for some group.
If you change a group, you change a?
Population
Parameter?
A number that describes a population.
Sample?
Gathering specific data from a small subset of a population.
Statistic?
A number that describes a sample, (e.g., Max of sample, min of sample, average of sample, fraction of sample)
Inference?
Take the things we do know from the sample and make an estimate to the things we don’t know like the parameters or population.
Random experiment?
Any given procedure whose fit outcome or result is not predetermined at the beginning o the experiment (outcome is not determined and can alter but procedure is fixed).
Sample space (s, omega)?
Consists of ALL possible outcomes/results for the given procedure (random experiment).
E.g., s = {1,2,3,4,5,6} when rolling a dice.
Event?
Any RESTRICTED collection of possible outcomes/results for a random experiment that will meet a specific criteria.
E.g., E = {2, 4, 6}
O = [1, 3, 5]
Is the sample space an event?
Yes
Empty set (empty event)?
An event without any outcomes.
What is the right way to specify when the event was successful?
The event has occurred or has happened.
Union of two events?
The new event that contains all outcomes that are contained in at least one of the given events.
Intersection of two events is?
The new event that only contains those outcomes that are contained in both given events.
When two events are said to be disjoint or mutually exclusive, then?
The events must have an empty intersection (no overlap between the two).
Complement of a given event?
Event that contains all the outcomes that are NOT contained in the given event.
What is the sample space equal to if you have an outer event and a small event A?
S = A U A^c
