1 Flashcards
What is acceleration
Rate at which an object’s velocity changes|speeding up, slowing down and changing direction are all examples of acceleration
What is friction?
Forces that oppose the motion or resistance caused when two surfaces touch each other or rub together the amount of friction between two surfaces depends on the texture of those surfaces, smoother surfaces have less friction| two things rubbing on each other
What is potential energy?
Energy that is stored available as a result of an object’s position or condition| roller coaster at the top of the hill| objects that are higher have more potential energy
Kinetic energy
Energy an object has due to its motion| Roller coaster at the bottom of a hill| faster a thing moves, more kinetic energy it has
What is force
A push or pull that acts on an object causes it to move, change speed, direction or to stop moving
Net force
The force that results from all the combined forces acting on an object
Balanced force
Forces that completely cancel each other out| sitting on a chair
Unbalanced forces
When forces act on each other and do not cancel out| ball down hill
What is air resistance?
Fluid friction acting on an object, moving through air, for example airplane
