Ch. 1 Review
Create the correct order in which the hierarchy of life flows: biosphere ecosystem community population organism organ system organ tissue cell organelle molecule atom.
biosphere -> ecosystem -> community population -> organism -> organ system organ -> tissue -> cell -> organelle ->molecule -> atom.
As you progress through the hierarchy of life, what emerges? What are they called? Why do they emerge?
New properties emerge, called emergent properties, because of the interactions among components at the lower levels.
What is teh difference between Eukaryotic and Prokaryotic cells?
Eukaryotic cells have a nucleus and other membrane-enclosed organelles. Prokaryotic cells do not have a nucleus and such organelles.
What are teh major themes in the study of life?
Organization, Information, Energy and Matter and Interactions
__________ accounts for the unity and diversity of life
Evolution
Darwin proposed natural selection as the mechanism for evolutionary adaptation of populations to their environments. Natural selection is the evolutionary process that occurs when a population is exposed to environmental factors that consistently cause individuals with certain heritable traits to have greater reproductive success than do individuals with other heritable traits.
Define Evolution and evolutionary adaptaion.
Evolution is the process of change that transforms life on Earth across long periods of time. In different environments, organisms evolve in different ways to match the needs of their environments.
What are the roles of gathering and interpreting data in scientific inquiry?
In scientific inquiry, scientists make observations (collect data) and use inductive reasoning to draw a general conclusion, which can be developed into a testable hypothesis. Deductive reasoning makes predictions that can be used to test hypotheses. Gathering and interpreting data are core activities in the scientific process, and they are affected by, and affect in turn, three other arenas of the scientific process: exploration and discovery, community analysis and feedback, and societal benefits and outcomes.
