08. AT 1 Cells Flashcards
Smooth ER
S = a long network of a folded, tube-like structure. F = synthesizes hormones and lipids
Rough ER
S =a long network of a folded, tube-like structure studded with ribosomes. F = protein synthesis for rest of cell
Golgi Apparatus (G.A.)
S =folded membranes within the cytoplasm F = proteins move to the GA where they are bound into vesicles. These are stored until needed.
Lysosomes
S = membrane-bound cell organelle F= They break down excess or worn-out cell parts. They may be used to destroy invading viruses and bacteria.
Ribosomes
S= Small intercellular structures F= Hold RNA, synthesize proteins from amino acids
Nucleolus
S = a spherical structure found in the cell’s nucleus F = essential for the formation of ribosomes, it is composed mostly of RNA
Nucleus
S = the membrane-enclosed organelle within a cell that contains the chromosomes F = holds the DNA or genetic material of the body
Mitochondrion (mitochondria)
S = membrane-bound cell organelles (mitochondrion, singular) F= provides the chemical energy required through aerobic respiration.
Cytoplasm
S = Gel like fluid F = Where most chemical reactions take place cell expansion, growth and replication
cell membrane
S = Thin membrane around edge of cell F = Allows for diffusion
