07/24 Thru 07/31 Flashcards
What is the formula for Force?
Force=pressure×area
What are the 2 major areas of fluid power?
Pneumatic and Hydraulic
All systems that use fluids but not for power shall be known as?
Fluid distribution systems
What is a fluid?
A substance that will flow into the shape of its container and exert a pressure
What is the difference between a liquid and a gas?
A liquid has a constant volume and a gases volume is determined by the pressure it is exposed to.
A liquid subjected to force will?
Seek the path of least resistance
What is Mass?
The measure of the amount of material in a body not affected by gravity.
What is weight?
The pull of gravity on a body
What is density?
The ratio of weight to volume
What is specific gravity?
How many times heavier a particular substance is than an equal volume of water
What is the unit of measure used to measure pressure?
Pounds per square inch (PSI)
What is the pressure due to the weight of a column of fluid?
Head
What is a vacuum?
Any pressure less than it’s surrounding atmospheric pressure.
14.7 PSI or an atmosphere is how tall on a mercury Barrometer?
29.92 inches
Flow through an orifice is determined by?
- Size of an orifice
- Viscosity or thickness of the fluid
- Pressure drop
What is the specific gravity of fresh water?
1 because the scale is based on fresh water
When gas is absorbed into a liquid due to pressure it is called?
Gas solubility
What are the 2 types of orifices?
Fixed and adjustable
What is an orifice?
Any restricted passage in a pipe or valve used to restrict flow.
What is pressure?
Force per unit area
What determines the pressure of a column of fluid?
Height
What is cavitation?
Formation and collapse of air bubbles caused by a pressure drop (gasses escaping the fluid)
As volume decreases pressure will do what?
Increase
Pressure to an enclosed fluid will be equally distributed to every wall of its container
Pascal’s law
