05 The Gaseous State Flashcards
5 assumption of kinetic theory of gases
- The gas particles are of negligible size and occupy a negligible volume compared to the volume of the container
- The gas particles have negligible intermolecular forces of attraction
- The gas particles are in continuous, rapid, random, linear motion
- Collision between gas particles are perfectly elastic
- The average kinetic energy of the gas particles is proportional to the temperature on the Kelvin scale
Axis of maxwell-Boltzman distribution
Y-axis : number of particles
X-axis : KE
What is the Boyle’s law
States that for a fixed mass of gas at a constant temperature, its pressure is inversely proportional to its volume ( means P directly proportional to 1/V )
What is the charles law
States that for a fixed mass of gas at constant pressure, its volume is directly proportional to its temperature in kelvins
what is the Gay-Lussac’s law
States that for a fixed mass of gas at constant volume, its pressure is directly proportional to its temperature in kelvins
What is the avogadro’s law ?
States that at the same temperature and pressure, equal volumes of any gas contain the same number of particles
What is the Dalton’s law of partial pressure
States that the total pressure of a mixture of gases is equal to the sum of the partial pressure of each component gas
What affects the deviation of real gas from ideal gas on curve ?
The initial dip : stronger intermolecular interactions = larger dip
Slant upwards : larger molecular mass = larger deviation
