04 Chemical Bonding Flashcards
What are chemical bonds ?
Electrostatic binding forces of attraction between particles such as atoms, ions or molecules
What are metallic bonds ?
Electrostatic forces of attraction between the cation and delocalised electrons
What are ionic bonds ?
Electrostatic forces of attraction between the oppositely charged ions
What is lattice energy (LE) ?
Energy released when one mole of solid ionic compound is formed from its constituent gaseous ions under stander conditions
What are covalent bonds ?
Electrostatic forces of attraction between the shared pairs of electrons and the positively charged nuclei of the two atoms
What are dative / co-ordinate bonds ?
Bonds formed where the shared pair of electrons is provided by only one of the bonding atoms
What is bond energy ?
The average energy required to break one mole of covalent bonds in a gaseous molecule into its constituent gaseous atoms
What is coordination number ?
The number of nearest neighbours in teh lattice structure
Structure and bonding of metals
Giant metallic structure
Metal cations are held in fixed position in an orderly arrangement surrounded by a sea of delocalised electrons
Structure and bonding of ionic compounds
Giant ionic structure
Ions are held in fixed positions in an orderly arrangement by strong electrostatic forces of attraction
Structure and bonding of covalent compounds
Giant molecular structure - atoms held together in an extensive network of covalent bonds
Simple molecular structure - many simple discrete molecules held together by weak intermolecular forces f attraction, covalent bonding within molecule
