[05] Disorders of the Immune System Flashcards
What are the two main types of immune system disorders?
- Immunodeficiencies
- Hyperactive immune responses
What is an immunodeficiency?
A condition that weakens the immune system, reducing its ability to fight off infections and diseases
What causes immunodeficiencies?
It can be caused by genetic defects, infections, malnutrition, aging, or certain medications
What is a primary immunodeficiency?
A genetically inherited disorder that impairs the immune system
What is a secondary immunodeficiency?
An immunodeficiency caused by external factors like infections or treatments
What is an example of a primary immunodeficiency?
Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID)
What is SCID?
A rare genetic disorder that impairs both T and B cells
What is an example of a secondary immunodeficiency?
Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS)
What is AIDS?
A disease caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), which weakens the immune system by attacking T cells
What is a hyperactive immune response?
An overreaction of the immune system to harmless substances
What are two examples of hyperactive immune responses?
- Allergies
- Autoimmune disorders
What is an allergy?
An exaggerated immune response to harmless substances (allergens) like pollen or dust
What are autoimmune disorders?
Diseases in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s own cells
What are two examples of autoimmune disorders?
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Type 1 diabetes
What is rheumatoid arthritis?
An autoimmune disorder causing chronic inflammation in the joints
