04 Integument Flashcards
What are the three layers of the integument?
Epidermis
dermis
hypodermis
what do the epidermis and dermis together form?
skin
what is the epidermis primarily made of?
keratinocytes
what is the dermis primarily made of?
fibrocyte
what is the hypodermis made of
adipocyte
describe stratum basale
stem cell layer; attaches to the basement membrane
describe the stratum spinosum layer of the epidermal
crawling layer - spaces for cells to occupy and/or crawl through
what is the stratum granulosum epidermal layer? What happens in this layer?
A transitional layer in the epidermis -cells in this layer start to loose their nuclei and turn into keratinised squames of the next layer.
What does the stratum corneum layer of the epidermas contain?
mature, fully differentiated dead cells filled with hydrophilliac proteins and surrounded by waxy materials
What are the two dermal features?
papillary layer and connective tissue layer
What is contained in the papillary layer?
capillaries and sensory receptors
What is contained in the connective tissue layer?
fibrocytes, hair folicles and nails, and special structures such as blood vessels, nerve endings and sweat glands.
