Q

VPI/Dysfunction- umbrella term for velum not achieving complete closure.

Catefories of VPI:

VP __________ - structural etiology. works fine but anatomically too short. may be byproduct of prior surgery, cleft, or platybasia (velum normal but base of skull too deep). webbing on faucial pillars (mechanical)

VP ___________ - neurological l involvement. common in 22q11 aka _____________ syndrome

VP ___________ - normal A/P, but mislearned speech sounds and VP doesn’t close on certain sounds (usually fricatives/affricates)

A

VPI/Dysfunction - umbrella term for velum not achieving complete closure.

Catefories of VPI:

VP Insufficiency - structural etiology. works fine but anatomically too short. may be byproduct of prior surgery, cleft, or platybasia (velum normal but base of skull too deep). webbing on faucial pillars (mechanical)

VP Incompetency - neurological l involvement. common in 22q11 aka velocardialfacial syndrome

VP Mislearning - normal A/P, but mislearned speech sounds and VP doesn’t close on certain sounds (usually fricatives/affricates)

Q

if velum doesn’t close, tx will not work. don’t be the dipshit SLP with the bright idea to try and “strengthen the velum” for speech with blowing and sucking. unethical. waste of time. pure fuckbaggery. don’t do it.

because

velum will close for blowjo…err, bio functions (_____, _______, _____) but not for voluntary. ie, _______
