The town of Pompeii, Italy was destroyed in 79 AD due to the eruption of nearby Mount Vesuvius. Everyone living there passed due to being buried under layers of lapilli which are burning fragments of pumice stone. The ruins of Pompeii draw 2.5 million people to visit every year due to the remains of structures that survived the eruption such as voids of victims and pottery which many marvel at.

South Korea received 46.3 thousand tourists looking to do plastic surgery of the total 248.1 thousand tourists who visited due to medical reasons in 2022. Those who visited for cosmetic surgery accounted for 20% of the total number of tourists and shows the demand for cosmetic surgery in the world.

In 2019, around 21 million people visited Magic Kingdom by Walt Disney World in Florida, USA, a theme park which occupies an area of around 1/3 the size of Singapore and has 6 theme and water parks, 5 golf courses, dozens of recreational venues of 23 on-site themed hotels.

Located 2350 m above sea level, Machu Picchu, Cusco, Peru, is known to be the last stronghold of the Inca Civilisation and attracted 1.6 million visitors in 2019 due to the 5 hundred-year-old stone architecture, walls, ramps etc. It is due to the usage of Machu Picchu being unknown and speculated to be a place of worship and astronomical observation as well as the rest places of the Royal Family of the Inca Civilisation.
Film-Induced
The Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, Hunan, China was featured in the 3D film, Avatar. In a bid to increase footfall to the park, park officials renamed one of the rock columns as the Avatar Hallelujah Mountains and introduced Avatar-themed tours. In 2018, the park received over 81 million tourists with 1.37 million tourists from other countries.
Pilgrimage
Religious sites attract around 3 hundred million pilgrims a year. Every year, the Hajj to Mecca, Saudi Arabia which is a religious duty for every able-bodied Muslim attracts over 3 million pilgrims and out of that 1.8 million pilgrims are from outside of Saudi Arabia.

The Grand Canyon in the USA attracted 6 million tourists in 2019 and had a high of 6.4 million in 2018 due to the ability to do camping, hiking, cycling, horseback riding and rafting there which they may not have been able to do back home. This is a different experience for them.
