sea level rise
around 600 million people live in areas less than 10 m above sea level. with rising sea levels, 2/3 of the world’s largest cities located in coastal areas are at risk. in the next hundred years with sea level rise continues at the current pace, 1/3 of coastal areas and wetlands will be lost.
increase frequency of extreme weather events
heat waves which are known as silent killers as they cause multi-organ failure leading to death as the body cannot cool down sufficiently. in august 2003, around 70 thousand people were killed in europe. young children and the elderly at especially at risk.
spread of infectious insect-borne diseases
in 2020 which was the 8th hottest year for singapore, singapore recorded a record high of around 35 thousand cases of dengue. from the 1980s to 2005 where there was an increase of 1oC, dengue cases increased from less than a thousand cases to mroe than 14 thousand cases.
lengthening of growth season
corn farmers in brazil will see their crop yield decline by 16%. rice production in indonesia will be spared but corn is slated to decline by as much as 20%.
