[028] Respiratory Failue Flashcards
1
Q
What is respiratory failure
A
PaO2 <8kPa
2
Q
What is hypoxaemia
A
Low level of O2 in arterial blood
3
Q
Type I respiratory failure
A
PaO2 < 8 kPa (60mmHg)
Normal PaCO2 < 6 kPa
4
Q
Type 2 respiratory failure
A
PaO2 < 8 kPa
High PaCO2 >6 kPa
5
Q
What is hypoxia
A
Refers to a deficiency of oxygen reaching tissues
Or conditions when FiO2 is low
! Patients do not have ‘hypoxia’ or get ‘hypoxic’
6
Q
What is a pulmonary embolism
Where does it usually propagate from
A
Essentially a blood clot causing clinically/ physiologically significant obstruction in pulmonary vascular tree
Having propagated (via right heart) from venous circulation where it was formed; Typically the deep veins of the leg ( deep vein thrombosis)
