0218 intro to microbiology Flashcards
To describe basic definitions in microbiology To recognise the importance of clinical microbiology in the practice of medicine To apply the concepts learnt today in subsequent learning forums involving clinical microbiology & infectious diseases
Rank these following microbes from largest to smallest: bacteria, prions, parasites, fungi, viruses
Parasites, fungi, bacteria, viruses, prions
Are bacteria and viruses eukaryotes or prokaryotes? What does this term mean?
Bacteria and viruses are prokaryotes. Prokaryotes are organisms which lack organelles and membrane bound nuclei
How do bacteria reproduce
Bacteria reproduce via binary fusion (asexual division)
Describe the structure of a virus
Genetic material (DNA or RNA), surrounded by a protective layer of protein and sometimes lipid and carbohydrates
What are the 5 types of virulence factors and what are they’re functions
Adhesins (bidning of organism to host), Invasins (enables orgasms to invade/enter cell), impedins (avoids hosts defence mechanisms), agressin (causes damage to host) and modulins (induces damage to host indirectly)
